Will "The Thrill" Viharo
Creepy Cool
PortHalcyon.com
This
unique New Jersey duo deftly blends classic surf reverbs, modern rock
vocals, cult movie soundtrack influences, art-punk angst and space age
electronica into one potent pipe bomb of hallucinogenic sounds. The ten
tracks of Creepy Cool made this listener feel as if I was happily
stoned while witnessing an alien invasion of a beach party...in slow motion.
The contemporary singing style of Danielle Kimak Stauss
(also known for the band Afterglow) offsets the "retro" factor,
but also provides an original combination (with inventive and well-informed
instrumentalist Stephen Masucci) of timeless and timely ingredients.
I've never heard anyone quite like them—maybe
Portishead without the Prozac comes the closest—at least not since
the heyday of New Wave experimental time-tripping. And if this is your
first encounter of the creepy, cool kind, neither have you.
